More than 70 independent promoters have presented plans for establishing new state funded schools under a government scheme, the Daily Telegraph reports (p2).

New legislation allows private groups to set up grant maintained schools from scratch, provided they raise 15% of the capital costs.

The Funding Agency for Schools, which was set up 4 months ago to deal with grant maintained schools, said it has received approaches from several groups, including Muslim and Christian organisations, the paper reports.
