Local education authorities will be funded to provide more adult education, to address the problems of illiteracy and innumeracy among adults, BBC Radio Four's Today programme heard this morning.

Education secretary David Blunkett told the programme he would be making an announcement today about ways to tackle the lack of basic skills among adults. He said he has made£20m available to invest in skills training.

'The new learning and skills councils will be able to fund directly the work that local education authorities undertake and I shall be reinforcing that in the commons this afternoon,' Mr Blunkett said.
