Labour-run Gateshead MBC has been accused of a 'lock-out on democracy' over plans to replace its existing committee system with a new cabinet-style political structure.

The new cabinet of 11 members will not be open to the public, press, or other members not specifically in the new group.

Liberal Democrats on the council have attacked the plans. Group leader Noel Rippeth said: 'This Labour lock-out is a staggering attack on democracy.'

Gateshead leader George Gill said the move was in line with government recommendations to modernise local government. The work of the cabinet would be checked publicly by special scrutiny committees and by the full council, he said.
