The Yorkshire Post (January 6, p6) reported that a community of gipsies has accused York council of forcing them to live in a rat-infested slum.

The paper says that the 50 people living on a council owned site have complained about flooding causing sewage to seep into the living areas, and rats living behind the toilet and shower buildings.

Housing committee chairman Viv Kind told the paper that the council was doing everything it could to solve the problem but said it was not easy to find another site.

'We inherited the site from Ryedale DC 18 months ago,' she said.

'We're not happy with it and we've put in a lot of time and effort to solve its problems. But you can't do it overnight.'
