Commenting on a recent World Wildlife Fund report* highlighting the failure of government policy to tackle the serious threat of pollution to freshwater and marine

environments, Damian Green, shadow environment minister, said:

'We should all be very worried about these threats to our coastal waters,

and it is particularly concerning that the report highlights

'inconsistencies in government policy' and their failure to recognise 'the

problems in estuaries and the marine environment.'

'This is a serious problem that needs an urgent solution and the people who

know best how to treat such problems are those in the locality.

'Conservatives therefore call on the government to give more powers to local

authorities to allow them to take effective steps to preserve these vital,

natural resources.'
