The Scotsman (p3) reports that council leaders say a thousand or more compulsory redundancies are likely if Glasgow city council is to achieve budget cuts of£80m.

The city's Labour groups will be told next Monday that it must now accept that the local authority cannot balance its books without forcing huge numbers of staff out of jobs.

Council leader Bob Gould told the paper that the 1,000 forced redundancies would come on top of 700 staff who have applied for voluntary severance and would also go.

'It's now clear that compulsory redundancies are unavoidable,' he said.

Glasgow is required to make a total of£80m savings to keep within government spending guidelines.
