Police in Glasgow are investigating possible electoral roll rigging after the city council's electoral registration officer received an unusually high number of late entries for the constituency of Govan.

William Johnstone received a 484 late requests for inclusion on the electoral rolls, 279 of them from Govan. He disallowed seven Govan claims.

Mr Johnstone told LGC the numbers alone were cause for suspicion but there were other factors which convinced him to call in the police. He declined to give details, but said there were questions over some people claiming to be resident in the Govan area and therefore eligible to vote.

The Glasgow Govan seat is held by Labour's Ian Davidson with a 4,125 majority.
