Frank McAveety, the newly elected leader of Glasgow City Council, is interviewed in The Herald (p4) and describes his vision for improving the council, stopping internal strife and raising more revenue, including extending council-tax Band H.

'My role is to encourage members to look outside the chambers more rather than look inside. If we concentrate more on the people outside, we'll realise what a huge task we have ahead of us in terms of choices and decisions. Only by doing that can we create the agenda that stops looking inward and punishing each other. From the assurances I have been given from all the leadership contenders, I believe we want to work together and make this council effective and to serve the people, not ourselves.'
