Glasgow Lord Provost James Shields has died aged 65 after a short illness, The Herald reported (Jan 7, p1).

Mr Shield's death follows that of his predecessor, Robert Innes, in May.

Politicians from all parties paid tributes to Mr Shields, described by one as a Gorbals man 'who never forgot his roots.'

Mr Shields had been an active member of the Labour party for more than 30 years.
