Strathclyde RC social workers have responded to criticism that an elderly man who was found dead four weeks after workers boarded up his Glasgow house, should have received more home visits.

Saturday's Daily Telegraph (p2) and the Independent (p2) report on the death of William Smith. Social workers are reported to have last seen him in June.

Bob Winter, Strathclyde RC deputy director of social work has announced an inquiry into the case.

He told the Independent: 'Obviously, we will be looking to see what we can learn from this tragic incident. We will examine our own role very carefully and discuss the situation with all the other agencies involved.'
