One former Strathclyde RC employee received salary payments of£30,000 from successor authority Glasgow City Council despite never taking up employment with it.

Glasgow this week admitted that 19 people who did not work for the council had received a total of£50,000 in salary payments. One ex-employee of Strathclyde, who never took up employment with the successor authority, has been forced to repay£30,000.

Finance director Jimmy Andrews said the council was confident that the remaining£20,000 would also be recovered.

The people involved were on either the education or social services payrolls, which are already facing overspends of£365,000 and£1 million respectively this year.

Leader Bob Gould said systems were now in place to prevent a recurrence.

He said: 'It saddens me that former council employees who were overpaid in error did not see fit to contact us.'
