Former lord provost Michael Kelly who launched the city's Miles Better publicity campaign back in 1983 told the paper the city had lost its focus.

Glasgow Regeneration Alliance, a group of local authorities and development bodies, have estimated that £1.5bn is needed to be spent on eight residential areas over the next 10-15 years.

David Webster, Glasgow's head of housing strategy, said only manufacturing could provide the manual jobs which people living in peripheral estate needed to get them off the dole, the paper reports.
