Glasgow City Council has warned unions that up to 2,000 staff could lose their jobs, and is trawling for volunteers to take redundancy or early retirement.(LGC magazine, p6)

Education staff are most at risk, with up to 550 job cuts predicted. Social work, property services, roads, catering and cleaning will also suffer.

Some 2,000 staff have taken voluntary redundancy and early retirement already this financial year, according to Unison.

Job losses are a result of the financial pressures resulting from reorganisation.

'Last year we cut away anything you could call meat. We're right into the bone now,' said Unison branch secretary Isobel McVicar.
