Gloucestershire CC are considering demanding at least £1m from the estate of mass murderer Fred West, to help them pay for the costs of his children's care, the Evening Standard reports (p1).

The Wests' five youngest children, aged from 12 to 17 are to receive a share of the predicted fortune due from the commercial exploitation of the West's notoriety, including the sale by the official solicitor of taped police interviews with Fred West.

The Standard says the council is understood to be considering submitting a request to the estate for money to pay for the children's welfare.

A senior council officer said: 'No one is saying that these kids are to blame in any way but a huge amount of money is being made for them through the notoriety of their parents when the taxpayer is footing the bill to give them a new start in life. That cannot be right.'

The council has given the children new identities, counselling and provided them with legal services.
