GLOUCESTERSHIRE PROPOSALS 'WEAK', SAYS ADC

The 'no change' recommendation put forward today for Gloucestershire by the Local Government Commission is weak and a wasted opportunity. said the ADC today.

The recommendations for Bristol, Bath/Wansdyke, Woodspring and Kingswood/Northavon and for Somerset show 'the way forward' said the ADC but Gloucester stood 'ill at ease' alongside these counties.

'It was contradictory that the acknowledged benefits of moving to a single-tier authority should be proposed for some people whilst just over the border people would continue to be burdened with the extra costs and waste of a tired two-tier system,' the ADC said.

In a Mori poll for Gloucestershire, public support for a unitary system was 65% and would be a good basis for the government to redirect the commission to look againat Gloucestershire.
