The GMB has launched a national campaign calling for councils to boycott contractor Serviceteam, following the sacking of four staff on the firm's troubled Wandsworth LBC refuse contract.

At a meeting at last week's Labour local government conference, GMB leaders vented their anger at the firm's attempts to exploit its Labour links to win contracts. Sales and marketing director David Sullivan is chair of Lewisham LBC's personnel committee.

'I don't want councillors to carry out Tory policies and sack trade unionists to finance their own bank accounts,' GMB vice-president Mary Turner told the meeting.

Mick James, a GMB shop steward sacked by Serviceteam, urged councillors to make the firm 'pay the price it made innocent people pay'.

Lewisham leader Jim Mallory and former leaders Steve Bullock and Margaret Moran were among more than 50 delegates at the meeting.

'We are not interested in any way in supporting this company,' Mr Mallory said.

Serviceteam has just lost its £1.1 million Epping Forest DC refuse collection, street cleaning and recycling contract to rival Sita UK.
