Goole Town Council is facing pressure from the GMB union to drop legal action against a sacked chief officer, reports the Hull Daily Mail.

Michael Wheaton, a former town clerk, was dismissed after a disciplinary hearing found evidence of financial irregularities and the council lodged a claim for compensation of£105,000 at the High Court.

Andy Worth, GMB regional secretary, said: 'We have been dismayed by the decisions of councillors who continue their legal action at the taxpayers' expense even though Mr Wheaton has been cleared by a police investigation.'
