Derbyshire firefighters are poised to mount their second nine-hour strike tomorrow, as their dispute over service cuts escalates.

Talks between the Fire Brigades Union and Derbyshire broke down last week, prompting the first stoppage on Monday. Military 'Green Goddesses' were drafted in as cover.

The firefighters are opposed to the axing of more than 70 posts in a £1.3 million cuts package. County leader Martin Doughty said: 'The union are fully aware that we cannot put any more money on the table to offset the savings that must be made, but over the last few days we have offered a number of alternatives which we believed would reduce even further the impact on the service.'

-- Essex FBU called off a series of nine-hour strikes after members voted to accept the county's offer to fund the recruitment of 40 firefighters using £500,000 from its emergency reserves.
