Lambeth LBC have shelved plans to make its former chief executive a freeman of the borough.

The South London Press (p16) reported councillors were worried that as the award for Commission for Racial Equality chairman Herman Ouseley came straight after his knighthood, only titled people would be invited to be freemen.

Labour leader cllr Jim Dickson told the SLP: 'He did a tough job in difficult circumstances and would be a good example of the sort of person who should be honoured. But we need to make sure this isn't simply a matter of gongs for the boys.'
