The Yorkshire Post (p1) reports that Goole Town Council clerk Michael Wheaton was yesterday sacked for 'gross misconduct'. Eighteen months ago there were repeated calls for Wheaton to step down after if was revealed he had been given a£17,000 salary rise in 1994 which took his pay packet to£71,000.

The Post notes that the recommended salary for a clerk on a council the size of Goole is about£23,202 a year. Council leader Mick Armitage would not explain why Wheaton had been sacked saying it would not be fair to discuss details of the dismissal because Wheaton had a right to appeal. Earlier this year a separate police inquiry into Wheaton's conduct was launched and a file is currently with the Crown Prosecution Service.
