Public Transport Minister, Roger Freeman, has announced Government approval to the sale of Southampton City Transport Co Ltd, 'Southampton Citybus', the bus company owned by the Southampton City Council, to its employees.

Southampton Citybus has a 140 vehicle fleet, which operates mostly within Southampton but also on an inter-urban limited stop service to Portsmouth. It has been sold through an Employee Share Ownership plan, whereby all the shares will be distributed to the employees of the company.

Change of ownership takes place under the terms of the Transport Act 1985, which allows authorities to sell their Public Transport Companies with the consent of the Secretary of State.
