The government is to change the date of next year's local government elections so they coincide with those for the European Parliament.

Lord Rooker, minister of state in the ODPM, revealed this during debate on the Bill paving the way for referendums on whether there is support for regional assemblies.

Earlier, the lords had given an unopposed third reading to the European Parliament (Representation) Bill. This consolidates in one measure all legislation relating to European elections, and allows citizens of Gibralter in this country to vote in European elections.

The Bill returns to the commons for approval.
