£500m is the latest damage figure from last month's IRA bombing of Manchester city centre, reports The Independent (sect 2, p2).

Of the £21m the government offered towards rebuilding, only £150,000 is from the government itself, the rest is European Union money earmarked for other parts of Britain and now diverted to Manchester.
