Construction of the A34 Newbury bypass was given the go-ahead by roads minister John Watts yesterday, reports The Guardian (p5).

The main work on the two-year scheme could start as early as 1996 and could well be the last major new road in the light of government cutbacks on transport spending.

Labour has indicated that it would probably scrap the scheme if it came to power.
