The government is hiding the truth about unemployment and making it difficult to get EC cash aid for areas with high job losses, according to a senior Northumbrian councillor.

Northumbria CC deputy leader Michael Davey told The Chronicle (p24): 'This is a double whammy because by massaging the jobless figure downwards, the government makes it more difficult for the UK to get help from Europe. Other EC countries massage their figures upwards so that they get more grants from Europe and access extra funds.'

Cllr Davey pointed out a national survey which showed that the total number of jobless in the UK is 14.4% compared to the official figure of 7.1%, and a survey carried out by Sheffield Hallam University which shows the total jobless in Northumbria is 17.4% compared to the official figure of 7.5%.
