Inadequate governors are driving teachers to early retirement, according to a National Association of Head Teachers report.
The Independent reports (p2) that 53% of head teachers believe that their governors are not doing their jobs.
In the survey of 150 head teachers in the London region, governors are criticised for interfering too much and changing the curriculum for political reasons.
Around 40% of head teacher posts are not filled at the first attempt, and the survey findings cited ill-health, long hours, governors, government reforms and new Ofsted inspections as contributing factors.
