Matthew Wilson, the 10-year-old who is the subject of strike action at Manton junior school in Nottinghamshire, has received treatment from a Chinese healer at the behest of school governors, reports the Daily Mirror (p5).

The governors wanted to give Matthew another chance, despite teachers union NASUWT's vow that teachers would not return to work until he had been expelled.

NASUWT spokesman Nigel de Gruchy said he was sceptical about the treatment. 'This is typical of the way they have treated this case from day one,' he said of the governors.

John Andrews of the Professional Association of Teachers said he had never heard of a governors body doing anything similar before. 'It's astonishing. They must be absolutely desperate,' he said.

The healer, SiKung Lowe, says he has cured the boy, claiming the root of the problem was tension caused by recent deaths in Matthew's family.
