Housing minister David Curry claims that the government has brought the private rented sector of housing back from the dead, but describes it as being still on a life support system.

The Guardian's society pages (p9) examine the state of the private rented sector, reporting that the total number of households who rent in Britain remains much lower than in Europe and that while many tenants believe they are overcharged and insecure, many landlords think they are not charging enough.
