A leaked draft of a Bill to be published next month, indicates that government proposals to force discussions on selection whenever a new school is built have been dropped.

The Independent (Oct 12, p2) reported that ministers seem to have backed away from plans to push through the introduction of new grammar schools.

But in his Tory party conference speech, John Major pledged to give parents a wider choice of schools.

The Daily Mail (Oct 12, p12) reported that the prime minister told conference: 'If parents want more grant maintained schools they shall have them - more specialist schools, we'll provide them - more selection they'll have it...And if parents want grammar schools in every town, so do I and they shall have them.'
