Education secretary David Blunkett yesterday predicted that grammar schools would be redundant within a decade.

The Financial Times (p4) reports that his remarks follow the news that parents trying to end selective education in Trafford, had failed to get the required number of signatures to force a ballot on the future of grammar schools.

He said: 'I would like to place a little bet that selection is seen as a total anachronism because children have reached a point together where they can transfer to secondary schools in a way that makes separating them out look completely daft.
