The Manchester Evening News reported (13 Feb, p4) that firefighters leaders were predicting a massive vote in favour of holding an industrial action ballot.

The move came after the county's fire and civil defence authority voted to accept an£82m budget package for the year.

The fire authority is using£1.6m in existing balances and reducing capital spending this year by£600,000 to escape breaking the cap limit of£80.79m, says the paper.

But£1m worth of cuts in services still need to be found and cuts identified include the loss of 36 jobs, seven by compulsory redundancy.

Authority chairman Fred Walker said job losses were unfortunate but that the authority had a tight budget.
