The Green party scored a clear victory in the Oxford Central by-election yesterday winning 51% of the vote.

The controversial election, called during vacation time in this predominately student ward by the Lib Dems, left the Lib Dems in second place and the Conservatives last. Labour did not field a candidate, after failing to submit its nomination papers on time.

Winner Sushila Dhall says: 'We won a clear victory - people want change and have obviously been impressed by green policies and the achievements of the Green party in Oxford

Ms Dhall joins fellow Green Caroline Lucas on the council to from the first political grouping of county council Greens in the country. The ward where she won is also represented by a Green, Mike Woodin, on the city council.

Results: Green (373); Lib Dem (287); Conservative (63). Turnout: 11.%.
