Guildford has won the prestigious British council of shopping centre's town centre environment award for 1996 again...
Guildford has won the prestigious British council of shopping centre's town centre environment award for 1996 against stiff opposition from other national retailing centres.

To win the award, Guildford's town centre needed to show a sustained improvement of the environment for shoppers and other visitors, as part of a planned strategy.

A creative and co-ordinated approach to management involving the private sector and those with special needs was also demonstrated.

John Nightingale, borough planning officer said: 'Everyone has worked very hard in submitting the bid for this award and we are delighted to have won.

'The award recognises work achieved over a period of years to harness commitment and investment from public and private town centre interests.

'The result has been a big improvement for those who visit, live and work here.

'It has also helped to make Guildford a much stronger shopping centre and brought us several places up the Hillier Parker's shopping league table where we now stand at 24th - above other major towns.'
