Environment Secretary John Gummer yesterday said Birmingham's Labour-run council was adopting scare tactics on jobs, reports The Birmingham Post (p1).

Mr Gummer said claims that his 2.3% limit on local authority spending increases would lead to large-scale job losses were unfounded.

He told the House of Commons: 'Last year there were claims about job loses in Birmingham. But in fact jobs increased by 2.3%.'

Birmingham's spending assessment has been cut from £889.8m this year to £864.8m in the 1994/5 financial year.

Council leader Theresa Stewart said 800 voluntary redundancies had been made in the past year and a further 200 vacant posts scrapped.
