Despite early speculation that he would become yet another cabinet casualty, outgoing environment secretary John Gummer retained his Suffolk Coastal seat.

Mr Gummer saw a significant reduction in his majority, with an 11.7% swing to Labour, but still won by a margin of 3,254 votes.

Gillian Shepard, the outgoing education secretary, also retained her seat in Norfolk South West, but a swing to Labour of 11.6% saw her majority reduced to 2,464.
