A competition to design a habitable bridge over the Thames has been launched by environment secretary John Gummer, The Independent reports (p4).

Architects are to be invited to devise a bridge that will span the river from Temple Gardens, near Covent Garden, to the London Weekend Television building on the South Bank. Their designs will form the centrepiece of an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in September.

Gummer, who is also minister for London, said the concept of a habitable bridge harked back to the old London bridge, which was stacked with houses and businesses.
