John Gummer has retained his position as environment secretary in the government reshuffle announced this afternoon.

Education secretary John Patten, Transport secretary John MacGregor and National Heritage secretary Peter Brooke all lost their jobs.

They will be replaced by Gillian Shephard (education), Brian Mawhinney (transport) and Stephen Dorrell (National Heritage).

Ian Lang keeps his job as Scottish secretary and John Redwood as Welsh secretary.

Other changes see William Waldegrave appointed as agriculture minister, Michael Portillo as employment secretary and Jonathan Aitken as chief secretary to the treasury.
