The biggest shake-up in years of the centre of London is to be announced by the government next week, reports the Evening Standard (p2)

The proposals to provide a more coherent approach to make the core of the capital more attractive for the millions who work, live and visit, will be unveiled by environment secretary John Gummer.

He will publish a 70 page document: 'Strategic Planning Guidance for London,' which will have two key themes: London's role as a 'world city' and the importance of the city centre, reports the Standard.

Meanwhile trade minister Tim Eggar announced he is doubling the money given by the government to the London First Centre.

The chief executive of the parent organisation, London First, described as a 'near miracle' the bringing together of local authorities and business.

The business community was now addressing local authority concerns like housing, he said, while local government had adopted issues traditionally dealt with by business, the Standard reports.
