Gwynedd CC's director of social services has accepted that the £1m overspend in the community care budget could have been avoided, reports the Western Mail (p9).

Responding to an investigation into the overspending by the Welsh Office's social services inspectorate Lucille Hughes said:

'A number of the problems identified in the report have been addressed and subject to the level of demand resulting from the cold weather, the finances are now in balance.'

However, the chair of the council's social services committee, Mair Ellis, has warned that the problems Gwynedd faced could be repeated throughout Wales because of inadequate government funding, the paper reports.
