Hackney LBC chief executive Tony Elliston has welcomed the appointment of Elizabeth Reid as the borough's new£85,000 a year education director, reports The Times (p7).

Mr Elliston said: 'I am absolutely delighted that Mrs Reid has accepted this important job. She has an outstanding track record and I am convinced that she will transform the quality of the council's education service.'

Mrs Reid, who is currently Edinburgh City Council's education director, said: 'My absolute priority in Hackney will be to listen to what head teachers, governors, parents and, I hope, pupils have to say.

'I will want to set targets within the first few months.'

Mrs Reid will take up her position in April.
