Hackney BC is considering re-opening a series of road subways to create a nightclub, reports the Hackney Gazette (p1).

The subways around Hackney's Lea Bridge Road roundabout were closed four years ago after a second person was murdered in them. The subways then were used by muggers and drug users, and local residents have already expressed opposition to Hackney's plans.

A Hackney spokesman said any plans for the area would go out to 'extensive consultation'.

The council is also considering allowing the subways to be used as workshops by Hackney Community College, and the central island on the roundabout could include a sculpture or advertising space.
