Hackney LBC's official Labour group has denied claims that it boycotted a ceremony to honour two long-standing councillors, break away New Labour group leader Gerry Ross and Conservative leader Joe Lobenstein.

Labour group leader John McCafferty said his members were too busy campaigning to attend.

The ceremony, held this month, was to give Mr Lobenstein and Mr Ross (pictured right with Hackney mayor Linda Hibberd) freedom of the borough.

Mr Ross wrote to Labour leader Tony Blair to protest.

New Labour group spokesman Phillip Pearson said: 'We believe Hackney old Labour have seriously misjudged their tactics in snubbing the council ceremony.'
