Hackney LBC hosted a visit by three government ministers to the borough to find out what life is like on an inner city housing estate, reports the Times (p8).

MPs Gary Streeter, Timothy Kirkhope and James Clappison toured estates on an initiative from 40 housing authorities around the country which are working together to curb crime on estates.

Bernard Crofton, Hackney LBC housing director told the paper that the main problem in clearing trouble makers off estates was protecting witnesses prepared to give evidence against them.

'Essential witnesses are too scared to give evidence in court. They have to live on the estate alongside people whom they are accusing and they are terrified at the prospect,' he said.

ADC chairwoman Margaret Moran told the MPs: 'At local level there is a great deal of co-operation between the different agencies but that is just not echoed between government departments.'
