Hackney councillors are set to embark on a course of self-improvement to make themselves more relevant to their voters, reports the Hackney Gazette (p13).

They have agreed to set up a special democracy commission of councillors and co-opted experts to examine measures to modernise local government. Steps include asking residents what changes they wish to see and looking at the structure of the council, how it consults and how it involves the community.

Deputy leader of the Labour Group, Julie Grimble, said almost 70% of Hackney people did not vote for any party in the May council elections.
