The Government Office for London has given Hackney LBC 'above average' status for housing services, its highest ever rating.

The Hackney Gazette (p14) reports that London's regeneration agency says the council's enhanced status is because of the borough's improved record on housing repairs, rent collections and re-letting empty homes.

It has also handed out£12.8m - the fourth largest grant in the country, to pump into Hackney's housing stock for the next year.

David Thompson, Hackney's director of housing, said: 'Although we still have a long way to go, this is great news for our tenants. It is a reflection of all the hard work of the residents, officer and partners.'
