Welsh secretary William Hague announced yesterday that he would commission a detailed study into all of Wales's trunk roads in a bid to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on Welsh highways, The Western Mail reports (p2).

He said he will be looking to the new unitary authorities to give greater priority to road safety measures.

The move to commission the study, which will lead to a five-year safety plan, comes in the wake of road statistics which show a 12% annual increase in the number of road deaths in Wales.
