Almost half of the country's schools are failing to teach the required minimum number of hours, according to the Independent on Sunday. The paper says Education Secretary John Patten has now asked Ofsted to investigate the issue.

Of 200 schools surveyed by the Independent on Sunday, 55% of junior schools and 42% of secondaries were teaching fewer hours than the government's recommended lower limit.
