More than a dozen have signed an early-day motion in the House of Commons calling for a moratorium on further referendums to create elected mayors.
The MPs say the recent elections could 'undermine the good governance of the councils concerned'. They have called for an assessment to be made of the new mayors' effectiveness before more ballots are heard.
Hartlepool's new mayor stood for election as the mascot of the local football club, H'Angus the Monkey.
Labour MP Mark Tami, who tabled the motion, said: 'I believe before we hold any more referendums we should have time to assess the success or failure of this experiment. I am deeply concerned by the outcome of a number of recent mayoral elections.'
