Fears are growing that the government's truancy league tables will be 'unfair and misleading' reports the Evening Standard (p5).

In the wake of Baroness Blatch's speech on truancy this morning, which pointed an accusing finger at parents, Hammersmith and Fulham council comment on fears that the tables will show a 48% average truancy rate at secondary schools in the borough.

Education committee chairman, David Williams, claims that the unauthorised absence level is nearer 6.5%.

Discrepancies arise because the tables are based on the number of pupils having one or more unauthorised absences, but this system would include trips to the dentists for example, said Mr Williams.
