Hampshire CC social services are good but must improve to meet rising demand, says a report by the Social Services Inspectorate and the Audit Commission.

'Overall the people of Hampshire are currently well served by their social services. The authority can be confident of generally sound professional foundations to its front-line service,' the report says.

It also speaks highly of the county's record on innovation and inter-agency work.

But there are areas of criticism, including variations and shortcomings in access to services, the range of services, managing risk, keeping records and reviewing cases.

The report recognises the council has gone through a reorganisation, but says rising demand for social services means Hampshire must 'become more responsive and combine its strengths to achieve more than the sum of its parts'.
